Leave the Rake in the Shed!

What to do with leaf litter……

The leaves on neighboring trees have turned color and are falling to the ground. Time to get out the rake??? That’s what most of us are used to doing. But consider leaving the leaves where they fall. There are many environmental benefits to leaving leaves in the garden/lawn that are described in this article from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Like rain runoff that we used to think was a nuisance but now realize it is a great resource; leaves provide backyard habitat, increase soil nutrients (less fertilizer needed)…..these and other benefits of leaves are described in the Cornell article.
