The kids kept us on our toes at the LCWC booth at the Elk Grove Great Pumpkin and Harvest Festival this past weekend.  Saturday and Sunday afternoon, the kids were lining up to spin the “wheel of fortune” and get the chance to win a prize by answering questions on the environment.   We also had a map of the watershed on display and kids and their parents could win a prize by correctly identifying which sub-watershed of Laguna Creek (or neighboring watershed) they lived in.  Everyone who participated won something. We were really impressed with the level of knowledge of many of the school aged kids.  In some cases, they knew more than their parents!  Elk Grove schools must be doing a good job teaching about the environment.  Here’s one question most of the kids got right:  How much of the Earth’s surface is covered with water?   Answer:  80%.

A number of residents raised concerns about an overgrowth of water hyacinths that clog the creek channel and might increase flooding risk.  A couple of people were concerned that runoff from car wash fund-raisers was draining right into the creek!  Who should be contacted to report these concerns?  A couple of members of the Board discussed this and decided the car wash question is easier to answer than the water hyacinth question.  We will be making some calls and plan to post answers later this week.  Stay tuned….
