  1. My family and I were walking along the laguna Creek trail in Elk Grove north of Bond Road and near the Camden Park area this evening, when we spotted a small bird feeding in the reeds about 40 yards away. After looking at it with our binoculars, we thought maybe it might be a Black Rail (Laterallus jamaicensis). The lighting was bad and we couldn’t quite see all of its colors, but after looking in the bird guide, the best ID we could make was that it was a Black Rail. However, the range map didn’t include the Sacramento area. I was wondering if there have been any recorded or reported sightings around the Sacramento area near Laguna Creek. Also, I understand that this is a rare and somewhat endangered bird so I wondered if any concern should be taken to help preserve its habitat around Laguna Creek, should it be found to live here.

    Thanks,

    Andy

    1. Hi Andy, thanks for asking about the rail, I personally have not seen one here, but I forwarded your question to a better birder than I am, and will forward his response to you. In Sunday’s Bee (and on our LCWC blog) there was an article about the Christmas Bird count and links to the Audubon Society’s count leaders for this year. It might be good to contact them and see if that bird has been included in past counts.
