Morrison Creek, Oaks, and Voles… oh my! – an update

Last Saturday, April 27th, a small group of folks, organized by George Waegell, went out to Morrison Creek to try to rescue the oaks from voles. On the first oak preservation effort on April 27, only a small number of trees were pruned. A second outing is planned in the near future that will utilize power tools (hedge trimmers, chain saws, etc.). A tentative date of Saturday May 11th has been planned to finish the job.

Oak Trees in Need of Help

Join us on the bridge on Woodring Drive where the road crosses Morrison Creek on Saturday April 27th 10 am!
George Waegell has been planting acorns in the open space in South Sacramento for years. He has babied and cared for these acorns and now many of them are oak trees. George would like to invite you to join him on Saturday April 27th in Mather to help out the Oaks!

Laguna Creek Clean-up!

35 Creek Week volunteers turned out on April 13 to remove a half-ton of garbage from the North Laguna Creek Wetlands.

Welcome the Return of the Swainson’s Hawk

On Saturday, April 14, Friends of the River Banks (FORB) held its fourth annual “Welcome the Return of Swainson’s hawks.” Hikers were rewarded with White-tailed Kite, Red-shouldered Hawks, Tree Swallows, and many more sightings. Two pairs of recently returned Swainson’s hawks soared high overhead to make the day complete. Don’t miss this event next year.

How low will it go?

I live very close to Laguna Creek and run along the trail frequently.  Over the weekend I was surprised and somewhat concerned to see how low the water had gotten in the last week!  With January and February of this year marking record lows for precipitation in the Sacramento area, Laguna Creek is showing the […]

Lawns into Gardens

Except from ‘Lawn into Gardens’ By Mark Bittman   The seed catalogs have arrived, and for the roughly 15 percent of Americans who appreciate the joys and rewards of growing some of their own crops, this is a more encouraging sign than Groundhog Day or even the reporting of pitchers and catchers to spring training. New Ways to Protect Our Creeks

This past summer, some creek friendly rules were enacted by the Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR). Estimates made by engineers at UC Davis suggest that this regulation should result in a 80% or greater reduction in pesticides in our local creeks. This is a statewide regulation so Laguna Creek will see the benefits as well as 100s of other creeks throughout California!!!

Rain, Rain, Rain

The Laguna Creek watershed is home to several protected grassland areas that are runoff uplands for vernal pools. They are filling with this week’s rain and the cycle begins anew.
