With the dreadful drought news last week and the Governor’s new water restrictions, it is more important than ever to look at what we can do at home to conserve water.
It is estimated that 50-65% of all residential water use is attributed to outdoor irrigation. With such a large percentage going to our landscapes, we should focus on what we can do outdoors to achieve maximum water savings. The Elk Grove Greener Gardens EXPO & Garden Tour is a great place to start!
In its 4th year, the EXPO & Garden Tour brings resources, experts and ideas directly to the homeowner. Elk Grove Greener Gardens is a group of local landscape professionals with a mission to share water-wise and river friendly practices and principles with citizens of Elk Grove and other local communities to create aesthetic sustainable landscapes that conserve water and reduce impacts on the environment and local watershed.
The EXPO will feature hands-on demonstration stations and experts that will help you create a ‘greener’, more sustainable garden. Some of the stations include:
- Lawn Conversion
- Backyard Habitat
- Rainwater Harvesting
- Permeable Paving
- Smart Irrigation
- Drought survival of Trees
- And more!
The Garden Tour is a self-guided tour of water-wise and eco-friendly gardens of Elk Grove. Register for the tour on line or at the event to receive your tour map. Each garden will include a garden description, complete with plant list that will correspond with numbered plants in the landscape. This is a perfect opportunity to see plants in the landscape and get ideas for ‘greening’ your own garden.
- EXPO is from 10-3 at Miwok Park on April 25th and the tour runs from 10-5, see the flyer for more information!
